Explainability & Transparency

AI Products must not only produce outputs but also explanations that make those outputs understandable to humans.
Explainability and transparency are essential for trust, accountability, and compliance.


Why Explainability & Transparency Matter

  • Trust → Users and regulators require visibility into how decisions are made.
  • Governance → Many AI regulations mandate explainability (e.g., GDPR, EU AI Act).
  • Accountability → Explanations enable responsibility assignment when harm occurs.
  • Fairness → Transparency exposes potential biases in training or decision logic.
  • Adoption → Organizations are more likely to adopt AI Products they can understand.

Explainability Requirements

AI Products must declare the mechanisms by which they provide explanations:

  1. Feature Importance

    • Identifies which input features influenced outputs most strongly.
  2. Model-Specific Interpretability

    • Saliency maps, attention weights, decision paths.
  3. Model-Agnostic Techniques

    • LIME, SHAP, counterfactual explanations.
  4. Human-Readable Summaries

    • Natural language rationales for decisions or outputs.
  5. Confidence Signals

    • Probabilities, error margins, or uncertainty estimates.

Transparency Requirements

In addition to explanations, AI Products must declare:

  • Training Data Transparency → What datasets were used, their origin, and licensing.
  • Model Transparency → What architecture or family of models underpins the product.
  • Limitations → Known weaknesses, blind spots, or failure modes.
  • Governance Transparency → Policies, risk classifications, and prohibited uses.
  • Operational Transparency → Logging, monitoring, and update practices.

AI Product: Credit Scoring Classifier

  • Explainability: Provides SHAP values showing contribution of features (income, repayment history).
  • Transparency: Training dataset sources declared; fairness audit results published.
  • Limitations: Not validated for micro-loans; higher false positive rate for sparse credit histories.
  • Confidence: Outputs creditworthiness score with associated probability band.
